As the custodian of the family’s heritage, the Gerstel Legacy Foundation presents three major initiatives that reveal an exceptional collection of documents to the world: a historical book, an illustrated coffee-table book, and an audiovisual production. From distinct yet complementary perspectives, these projects offer a unique window into the context before, during, and after World War II, preserving the original memories of the Gerstel and Ostberg families through a narrative designed to stand the test of time.
Gerstel Legacy Foundation: Preserving Memory
The Gerstel Legacy Foundation was established with the firm institutional purpose of safeguarding, preserving, and disseminating Dietrich Gerstel’s extensive family historical archive, establishing itself as an active documentation center that also incorporates the records, letters, and key testimonies of the other Gerstel and Ostberg families. What began as the preservation of a personal legacy has now evolved into a platform for access and research in the service of collective memory.
The core value of this archive lies in its status as a primary source. Through original correspondence, period photographs, and official documents, the foundation preserves firsthand accounts that accurately describe the mounting pressure from the National Socialist regime in the early 1930s. The collection not only captures the intimacy of family life but also the cold reality of historical processes: the systematic confiscation of property from Jewish citizens, the complex and stifling bureaucratic procedures required for exile, and the forced dispersal of a family to different corners of the world.
In particular, the archive provides a detailed map of survival: from the departure from Europe and the crucial stopover in Cuba, to the final arrival and settling in Venezuela. By organizing and indexing this heritage, the Gerstel Legacy Foundation fulfills a dual mission. On the one hand, it carries out an act of historical restitution that restores identity and a voice to those whom horror sought to erase; on the other, it offers future generations and the academic community a living testament to resilience, migration, and endurance, reaffirming that the preservation of the past is the only tool capable of overcoming oblivion.
Projects in Progress: From the Archives to Society
To fulfill its founding mission of promoting this historical heritage, the Gerstel Legacy Foundation is currently moving forward with the implementation of major complementary projects. These initiatives aim to bring the contents of the private archive into the public sphere, combining the rigor of academic research with the power of audiovisual media.
The Historical Book: Reconstructing the Legacy
This research work is intended to serve as the documentary and academic foundation of the project. Far from being a literary work or an individual biography, the text takes a comprehensive approach to the collective history contained in the family archive. Its methodological framework combines the analysis of internal primary sources—such as personal correspondence, civil records, and expropriation documents—with an exhaustive critical apparatus of external sources and a complementary bibliography by renowned specialists, thereby ensuring the accuracy of the historical context of the period. To reinforce its historiographical value and its role as a bridge between Europe and South America, the book features two analytical forewords: one by German historian Nikolaus Böttcher and the other by Venezuelan historian Tomás Straka.

The Table Book: An Illustrated Archive
Conceived as a direct window into the heart of our family heritage, this volume will highlight the power of the image and the material eloquence of each document. Through a careful selection of photographs and high-fidelity reproductions of personal correspondence, diaries, and original records from the Gerstel archive, the book is designed to offer an aesthetic, accessible, and deeply moving experience.
Its structure follows a rigorous chronological narrative designed to make the life stories of Dietrich and Irmgard Gerstel more accessible and vivid. Readers can follow a linear account of their ancestral roots, their years in Germany, and their subsequent exile, tracing their journey through Cuba until their permanent settlement in Venezuela—the country where they put down roots, established a home, and achieved their full professional potential.
With a dynamic design and precise contextual text, the book—currently in the midst of preparation and editorial design—invites readers to connect with the shared history of the Gerstel and Ostberg families from a unique visual perspective.
The Movie: Adapting the Script for the Screen
As a visual counterpart, this audiovisual production draws primarily on the valuable documentary collection in the family archive. Through this material, the film faithfully reflects the reality of prewar Germany and the rise of the Nazi regime, while also tracing Dietrich Gerstel’s subsequent journey into exile and the rebuilding of his life in Venezuela.
This historical backdrop is interwoven with the commemorative journey undertaken by three generations of the family in 2026, offering a contemporary and moving perspective on the properties, monuments, and sites that mark the history of the Gerstel and Ostberg families. To enrich and validate the narrative, the documentary supplements the context with contributions from scholars and other prominent figures in the field of historiography. Furthermore, the project incorporates a rigorous selection of iconographic and filmic materials sourced from leading global institutions, such as the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv), the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), the Berlin State Archives (Landesarchiv Berlin), among others.
This audiovisual production is moving forward in its development phase under the direction of ValeTV, Venezuela’s cultural channel, in preparation for its upcoming premiere.
